Eva, a curious and spirited human teenager, is brought up in a state-of-the-art bunker by Muthr, a robot guardian. On her 16th birthday, following an assault on Eva's bunker, she discovers herself on the surface of a strange planet named Orbona, which is inhabited by aliens, adorned with unearthly flora, and lacks any other humans to be seen.

Eva encounters Rovender, a Caerulean, in an old HRP Sanctuary close to the Wandering Forest. After being captured by the huntsman Besteel, they worked together to escape, even though Eva spoke English and Rovender spoke only Caerulean. They set up camp in the forest, where Rovender used a device called a "vocal transcoder" to translate their languages, making communication much simpler.
